The upcoming Coronation will undoubtedly give way to a grand celebration of all things British; streets across the country will be lined with decorations and long tables where family, friends, and neighbours will come together to share the memorable moment.

Importantly, these street-party tables will be filled with food and drink to sustain those around them. For the food, what better way to commemorate such an historic British occasion than with a British bird, in the form of Coronation pheasant?

Wild game, compared with classic supermarket meats, is astonishingly versatile; the flavour profiles of one type of bird are completely unlike another, giving you plenty of room to experiment in the kitchen. It has a lower carbon footprint than most mass-produced meats, and the industry is essential to the management and maintenance of countryside environments.

The versatility of wild game as previously been celebrated by the new monarch himself, who once created his own version of the Greek dish moussaka, but with grouse instead of lamb. He said, “It doesn’t always have to be lamb – in other words, groussaka!”

Pheasant is probably the most popular of game birds, with good reason. A white meat with a mild flavour, it’s definitely the best place to start if you’ve never tried game before. What’s more is, compared with chicken, pheasant is far higher in protein and selenium and lower in calories.

If you’re preparing for the bank holiday weekend and thinking about cooking coronation chicken, try pheasant instead. This delicious summer dish is the perfect way not only to introduce family and friends to game but also to celebrate the coronation of our new British monarch.
